As of February 26, more than 450 state-level anti-LGBTQ bills are pending in the U.S.

In many places, we’re already seeing the detrimental impact on our communities. Iowa recently became the first state to strip protections for transgender and nonbinary people from its Civil Rights Act. In Georgia, a ban on allowing transgender girls to play sports is advancing in the legislature. Nearly half of all U.S. states have made it difficult or impossible for transgender people to access lifesaving health care; and extremist lawmakers are seeking to expand those restrictions further. And lawmakers in at least nine states have proposed measures to undermine same-sex couples’ freedom to marry.

These bills are an attempt to roll back our progress on acceptance for LGBTQ people—but we’re not powerless, and we’re determined to organize more than ever.

All youth should be able to participate on sports teams alongside their peers. All Americans should be able to make health care decisions that remain between them, their families, and their trusted providers—NOT the government. And all of us deserve to live safely, free from discrimination, with dignity and equal opportunity to build a promising future for ourselves and to be able to care for our families.

We must make our voices heard. Get involved and speak out.

As your constituent, I am urging you to vote NO on any and all anti-LGBTQ legislation.

LGBTQ people are facing relentless attacks unlike anything else our community has faced in recent history—from basic access to medical care, to student participation in school sports, to the freedom to read books in libraries.

Extremist lawmakers are feeling emboldened by attempts at the federal level to roll back our rights and erase us from public life. Since the first day he took office, President Trump has forced executive orders harming transgender Americans’ access to health care, banning brave transgender soldiers from being able to serve in the military, and rolling back diversity initiatives and increasing censorship in schools and communities with the intention of erasing any mention or conversation about LGBTQ people and issues.  

These attacks are disproportionately hurting LGBTQ youth. Everyone deserves equal protection, equal opportunity, and fair treatment, especially youth who are the future of our country.

The hundreds of proposed anti-LGBTQ bills across the country will advance discrimination and cause harm particularly to young people, their families, and their loved ones. Young LGBTQ people should not have to watch lawmakers debate their basic humanity.

Polling by the Trevor Project indicates that the mere introduction of state-level anti-LGBTQ bills has direct harm on young people’s mental health. To truly support all of our youth, and to ensure every family has a chance to succeed, we shouldn’t single anyone out because of who they are or who they love; and that includes our LGBTQ neighbors.

I'm writing to urge you to oppose blanket bans on our basic human rights or anything that would limit the ability for LGBTQ people in our state to participate fairly and equally in our society.

Please stand on the right side of history and do what is right for your constituents and families. Please be a leader in opposing rollbacks and restrictions on LGBTQ rights.
